A terrible retribution looms over Israel
A SCEPTICAL BIBLE READING OF THE BOOK OF
HOSEA 7 to 10
Chapter Seven
More seething
ranting hatred from God, comparing the Hebrew nations to over-cooked unpalatable burnt
bread, and they continue to seek assistance from neighbouring lands despite
God’s warnings, so he promises further retribution still.
Chapter Eight
Israel has set up politicians and kings who are not of the great
bloodlines supported by God. They worship a new fatted calf.
Here is a cryptic description of feuding church and state,
with the religious leaders disturbed by politicians they cannot control, while
the politicians accuse the priests of corruption.
Verse 7 is well
known as it has become a famous quotation. “For they have sown the wind, and
they shall reap the whirlwind.” There is a near karmic sense of
retribution in this line, where every action seems to have a negative reaction
from God. His chosen people seem
to get nothing right.
As punishment,
Israel will be conquered and swallowed up by other nations, especially Egypt.
Ephram will share
Israel’s fate. The cities of Israel will perish in flames.
Chapter Nine
Ephram &
Israel will fall to Assyria & Egypt. They will find no help
from God in the long suffering, hunger and thirst to come. The children of the
Ephramites will die young, leaving their parents in perpetual grief. Mothers
will miscarry. The men will go barren.
The people of
Gilgal are dismissed completely as beyond redemption. “I hated them,” God says
simply. (Verse 15).
Chapter Ten
The long suffering will start to tell Israel that she has
abandoned God (though it is clearly he who forsakes them here) and they will
start to pray to him in earnest once more, but their redemption will not be due yet. It is
too little and too late. Samaria and Assyria will also start to be punished now
for not loving God enough for his liking. A repeat of the intention by God to
cut off any assistance for his special chosen people.
His behaviour here is just despicable.
