144,000 souls are spared from death in the destruction of Earth

            A SCEPTICAL BIBLE READING OF REVELATION 7

There is an interlude episode preceding the breaking of the 7^th and final seal on the Book Of Life.  

 

John, holding back the winds of the Earth, sees four angels. Another angel, in supervisory mode, instructs them to keep up this duty until God’s most righteous and favourite souls are marked with a special forehead symbol, their ticket to safety in what will follow. (Why were they subjected to the hazards presented by the previous six seal-breaks? They could have been rescued before that even started). 

 

The lucky few, (144,000 only), are divided into 12,000 descendants from each of the twelve Tribes of Israel.  These lucky 144,000 are then whisked to Heaven alive to join the end of the World party and watch the rest of humanity suffer & perish.  The Lamb will feed them personally (Jesus acting as a waiter?) and they will receive water from living fountains. (Yeuch).  If they cry, as they might well do watching friends and relatives dying below on Earth), God will wash their tears away personally (even though his action causes their distress in the first place).

                                    Chapter 8

 

The last and most terrible of the Seven Seals is now broken. A thirty-minute silence descends on Heaven and Earth giving an ominous air to the enormity of what is coming, before seven angels take up seven trumpets. They poise ready to blow them.

 

Another angel conducts a solemn mass and sprinkles all with incense (presumably not God, why would he need it?). The Angel then refills the incense censor with fire and throws it at the Earth. The trumpets are sounded and each unleashes a plague upon the increasingly desperate humans below.

 

The first trumpet unleashes hail. The second turns mountains into volcanoes and the oceans into blood. The third brings down the star, Wormwood (A Star would be too big to crash into a planet. It would more feasibly be a comet, but hey, this is the infallible testimony of God, so who am I to argue fine details?).  The 4^thtrumpet reduces the Sun & Moonlight by a third, plunging the World into darkness and shortening the day considerably.

Just when we think the worst of this is over, an Angel arrives in the sky shouting ‘Woe’, and announcing that worse is yet to come. (Verse 13).

 

Chapter nine will prove him right.
