Paul tells Timothy suffering is good for us

A SCEPTICAL READING OF THE BIBLE – PAUL’S 2^nd EPISTLE TO TIMOTHY

Chapter 1

Paul greets Timothy in writing and assures his friend that he is always in his prayers. Paul also knows Timothy’s parents well.

Paul laments that his periods of imprisonment have made many of his Christian friends distance themselves from him, possibly as Paul is being watched and they don’t wish to be arrested with him in future raids. Paul regrets loss of friendship with Phygellus and Hermogenes (verse 15) Paul seems to think God will be wrathful onto these men for this self-preservation stance. Paul believes however that Christ will look after Onesiphorus, as he stayed loyal to Paul despite his captivity.

Chapter 2

Paul takes pride in his sufferings, and advises Timothy not to be troubled by any stories he hears about him (Paul). He accuses Phygellus and Hermogenes of slanderous babblings, implying that God has yet to smite them as Paul wishes he would. Paul accuses the two men as being dismissive of Christ’s resurrection.

Chapter 3

The end times are coming and Paul presents a catalogue of the sins and lusts that will befall the unfaithful to Christ. Self-love, blasphemy, lust, etc. Paul feels his prison sufferings are minor compared to the sufferings awaiting the ungodly.

Chapter 4

Paul feels close to death and implores Timothy to keep trying to make as many converts as possible. Luke, the Gospel author is with Paul, but Paul misses his friends, including Timothy.

Paul seems amused that a coppersmith called Alexander who opposed him (Paul) was punished in some way by God.

Paul sends Timothy greetings from various other leading Christian evangelists.

A touching heartfelt letter of sadness at being apart from a friend, marred by bitterness towards Paul’s rivals and some un-Christian pleasure at any news of them coming to misfortune.
