BOOK REVIEW- ALAN MOORE – TOM STRONG #3. America’s Best Comics.
In which a volcanic man from the centre of the earth kidnaps our intrepid hero’s daughter, Tesla. Giving chase to rescue her, Tom finds that Tesla has saved herself by teaching the molten man how to seduce by charm instead of simply abducting him a bride. Alienated from his own culture, the lava man ends up staying with the Strongs, and unknown to Tom, he is making love to the girl.
Tom has barely gotten used to the new addition to the family when a mysterious space cowboy calling himself the Weird Rider, who has dire news, visits him. The Rider was a frontiersman in the late 19th century, but his community were abducted by ants and implanted with a third eye in their foreheads. Used as slaves, and aware that the ants are planning to invade and conquer Earth completely, the people help the rider escape, and he seeks Tom’s assistance to save the planet. Tom, aware of the scale of the invasion force, calls in assistance from many old allies, and the unlikely team annihilate the invaders in space.
In the remaining, unconnected stories, Tom’s wife is abducted by a group of feminist heroes, and Tom is reluctantly called in to help out the women only community. Paul Saveen, Tom’s deadliest enemy, dies a lonely death in the desert, having been duped into buying a bogus map that he hoped would have lead him to the fountain of immortality.
In the last story, Tom and his wife are trapped in the pages of a comic book by a crazed collector, and meet heroes who seem happy with their 2-D captivity, but Tom & his wife escape and trap the collector in the magazine himself.
As inventive, and exciting as the other issues, if a little contrived in how the defenders are united for the ant invasion story threads, but light years ahead of much standard comic book fare.
