BOOK REVIEW ANONYMOUS POEM – THE GOOD SHIP VENUS.
Notorious bawdy Rugby
song, to which many men (and women) know at least some verses and the chorus,
Friggin’ In The Riggin’.
The poem was set
to music by punk band The Sex Pistols towards the end of their career, (and
features in the closing moments of the film documentary about them, The Great Rock And Roll Swindle). But essentially the verses are a series of limericks
about the extreme sexual antics of a bunch of sailors and pirates on The Good
Ship Venus, who, bored by their time at sea, start having sex with each other,
the figurehead, holes in walls, and more besides. The humour is lavatorial
comic strip material of the highest level of absurdity.
In many cases,
the sexuality is pure molestation, for which the attacker gets an unpleasant
surprise. In a typical verse, one crewman, protecting himself from being
sodomised, fills his rectum with broken glass and ends up circumcising his
captain.
Such glorious political incorrectness abounds in the poem, which if sung in full (usually with people making up their own verses) can go on too long, but done well, it is a brilliant way to entertain friends on long coach trips, or even an ocean voyage.
