ALDISS, BRIAN Ė DRACULA UNBOUND 1991 Grafton Books.Itís a shame when a generally great author produces a work of utter tripe, but Dracula Unbound plainly fits that description. This is a sequel to a fine novel, Frankenstein Unbound, though the characters from that are barely mentioned and the work could be seen as a totally independent product from its illustrious worthy predecessor. Here Dracula is a Pterodactyl. Yes, you read that correctly. This moves way away from the traditional depiction of Vlad Teppes. Dracula is developing some sentience among his kind, when he grabs a passing time machine and takes it to the far-flung future where he takes over the World and all but destroys it. Now he sends his minions out in time machines to feed on the flourishing populations of people from the period in which we live. The time machine is a train, which moves quickly, but which sometimes gets taken for a ghostly vision. Meanwhile, an archaeological expedition in the present day American desert uncovers prehistoric artefacts with modern trappings, which they fail to explain. Worse, the ghost train is seen in the proximity of their dig. The expedition includes survivors from Aldissís earlier novel, who manage to board the time-train. They drop onto its roof from helicopters and just melt in through the roof to the carriages below. Aldiss never explains why they donít fall through into the desert below. The train is infested with vampires, but the heroes capture it and take it to Victorian London where they end up picking up Bram Stoker as an extra passenger before going on to the future to kill Dracula himself. Stoker, a syphilitic drunkard proves useless to the mission, and it seems to be only from the success of including Mary Shelley alongside Victor Frankenstein in the sequel that he is involved in the story at all. The book is laughably inept, and it seems sad hat a true giant of the genre should be reduced to writing such a work as this. http://www.brianwaldiss.com/
