BOOK REVIEW - WONDERFUL WORLD OF WORDERS Compiled and edited by Jenni Doherty. 2007 Guildhall Press.
This lovely collection carries ore than five hundred micro-short stories (sometimes called Flashers) by more than seventy authors (including fourteen by myself).† The stories are set out alphabetically by title, and many come from online exercises set for the More Writing group http://www.morewriting.co.uk/user/782/ Sixty word challenges set and judged by members of the free to join online writers community with subjects for the following month chosen by, the winning entrants in a given competition, Titles include A Tap At The Window, Passion, Identity Illusion, and You Have One New Message, all set out in easily accessible alphabetical order by title, with an index of authors following.† A few other online groups Jenni supports have contributed slightly longer stories.
Stories that can be read in less than a minute are a very challenging writing exercise, but the authors here manage to produce many stories that still carry a beginning, middle and satisfying conclusion. Itís a true art form. If you think you can do it, check out the website. Youíll get honest feedback on your work, and possible inclusion in any future books of the best of the group.
Some stories are puns, others with more serious observations. Many have savage twists in the tale. All are entertaining, and contributions from book sales also go to a worthy charitable cause, The Action With Effect Group, based in Ireland, and helping destitute children, the homeless and leprosy sufferers in India.
Having participated in the writing groups that produced many of the stories, I think Jenni has done an amazing job in selecting the cream of a very rich crop, though she let mine break through the net too. She has worked tirelessly to prepare and launch the book, which has been extremely well received.
