Violent and shamelessly silly comic strip in the Dredd series. The Hunters Club take pride in their favourite sport, killing people for the sheer hell of it. One New Year’s Eve, their founder Elmort Devries, (drawn to look like Vincent Price), hits on the novel idea of raising sponsorship to have his club members kill as many people as possible for charity. He gets the first shot fired himself on one crook at the club who thinks it’s a stupid idea. The other members of the club take to the game with great enthusiasm. Mega City One erupts in a ridiculously large-scale blood bath. There are great comedy moments, ie’ the killer who drowns people in their own toilets, the grenades going through the entrance doorway to an acid house party, the villains starting to kill each other to claim each other’s points, etc. The killers themselves are, (without knowing it) wired to explode by Elmort who plans on keeping the money to himself. When Judge Dredd nearly catches one Perp (perpetrator of crime) who is on the game, the Perp gets blown up by Elmort. Dredd has a medical crew wire what’s left of the man to a machine and forces him to talk. Dredd then goes after Elmort and the judges round up or kill the remaining Perps in The Hunters Club. Elmort resists with lots of weapons, including his own nuclear bomb, arguing all along that it’s all for charity, but Dredd is totally unimpressed as he kills him. A great dig at grand scale charity fund-raising projects. Funny, frightening and with an absurd range of weaponry used by both the Perps and by the cops chasing them, who begin to see themselves as more professional hunters playing essentially the same game.
