BOOK REVIEW – NEIL GAIMAN – THE SANDMAN #5 – A GAME OF YOU 1993 DC COMICS

Startling as ever edition in the epic Sandman series, in which Sindy, (the real life doll) recovering from her separation from Ken, lives in bedsit land with a lesbian couple, a man / woman half way through a sex change operation and unsure of his / her current gender, and a witch.

When Sindy is summoned to a distant magical realm that is being terrorised and destroyed by an entity known only as The Cuckoo, Sindy recalls her former days as the land’s princes, and goes into a dream-state to send her mind back to the realm to help save the day, only to find the Cuckoo is a former, younger version of herself, and that she is trapped in a spiralling game complex involving her own identity.

Events that should take their own course and lead to the natural end of a fantasy dream realm are unfortunately interfered with when Sindy’s neighbours attempt a rescue, and it takes the intervention of Morpheus, The Sandman and God of dreams himself to put matters back on course. Few will see happy endings.

There are some very dark images here, the killer birds, a dead baby eating a living one, a giant dog, the Moon being stolen from the sky, etc. The downbeat atmosphere in the real world juxtaposed over a cheerful fantasy realm coming to its doom, - dreams and nightmares abound.

Morpheus makes only a few appearances here – but when he intervenes, what transpires is unforgettable. The witch is also an amazing creation, casually killing men and birds alike for her rituals, and nailing a man’s face to the wall and then bringing it back to life to tell its tale, but her magic is not one she can control. Her action will have consequences for all.
