BOOK REVIEW - RAMSEY - CAMPBELL – NEW TALES OF THE CTHULHU MYTHOS. 1989 Grafton Books –

A terrific collection of modern horror stories in the H. P. Lovecraft tradition, edited by one of England’s leading horror writer’s. The highlight of the collection is the inclusion of Stephen King’s Crouch End, in which a tourist takes a wrong turn in a London full of creatures from beyond our dimension, and never returns. Even the police who help her or search for her come to very unpleasant ends. King, a US writer, captures the mood of a modern day London suburb extremely well here. Campbell’s own inclusion features a young lad who discovers mysterious forces by the seaside and finds that his parents are involved more than they could ever let on. One story in the book has input by H P Lovecraft in an unfinished work, completed by Marin S. Warmes, - The Black Tome Of Alsopheous, about what happens when someone dares to make use of the incantations in an old book of supernatural spells. It is no less a work than the fabled Necromonicon, allegedly written centuries before by a mad Arab, and which gets so many mentions in Lovecraft’s work that many people think it really exists. (There have been modern fake copies produced from time to time). As the character in the book here discovers, those who do open the book, usually go quite mad. The Cthulhus encountered are never benevolent entities. A work that comes close to the spirit of Lovecraft’s tales of terror is Basil Cooper’s Shaft Number 247 Minors are warned not to go down a certain pit shaft, where there have been accidents and disappearances, but one finds himself compelled to go and finds what the reader knows full well must lurk therein. A bold reworking and celebration of the Old Gods. Well worth a look. http://www.arkhamhouse.com/about.htm
