KESSELL, KARL - SUPERMAN V THE REVENGE SQUAD 1999 DC TITAN

Graphic novel with a fairly basic premise: Five separate super villains who have had their plans thwarted in the past by Superman, find themselves drawn together into a team by a mysterious sixth figure, who we are led to believe to be Lex Luther, and sent to destroy Superman once and for all. The organiser will ultimately prove to be someone other than Lex, but his identity is not revealed. The five potential assassins are: 1/. Barrage, a man with bazooka like guns whom likes blowing people away. He has plans to avenge himself on a policewoman who helped arrest him in a previous encounter with The Man Of Steel. 2/. Riot – The most interesting of the five, being a scrawny skeletal figure that splits into two copies of him each time he is hit, so that by Superman repeatedly thumping him, he becomes an army. He just wants to rob banks, and becomes a reluctant assassin. 3/. Anomaly – A man who can become like any metal or physical material he touches. He is a clone of a previous version of the villain who Superman had apparently killed off. He is rather similar to rival Comic Marvel’s The Absorbing Man in The Incredible Hulk comics. 4/. Misa is more interesting, but rather underused. She has the ability to make things defy the laws of physics. Se is a spoilt brat who just uses her powers for hedonistic fun with no real regard for the consequences. 5/. Maxima - A Wonder Woman like Goddess who loves Superman and takes his rejection of her advances with some disdain. Their attacks come at a bad time for Clark Kent. His relationship with Lois is in trouble, and he is standing in as temporary editor at the Daily Planet while Perry white undergoes chemotherapy. He struggles to make the Planet journalists work as a team just as the team sent to kill his own alter-ego fights and argues – the build up to confrontation is great so the final struggle is something of a let down. The enemies squabble more with each other than with Superman or the cops. An entertaining story but ultimately not as explosive as it would like to be. http://www.dccomics.com/
