EITCH, RICK & WRIGHTSON, BERNI - SWAMP THING; SPONTANIOUS GENERATION 2003 DC COMICS A very disappointing contribution to the DC comic classic series. Swamp Thing is a complex mystical superhero saga with a strong environmental message. In this adventure, he has returned from visiting outer space, and he is disillusioned enough to feel as if he needs a replacement. He has turned down a responsible role before the Parliament of Elementals, and the consequences of this do not look good for earth. He has tried to groom a carrot like seed-sprout as his successor, but the project seems to be failing. John Constantine, a cancer riddled demon fighter, aids Swamp Thing by trying to plant the carrot like entity on various people destined to die in plane crashes, fires, etc. From Hell, and Heaven, demonic forces watch the plight of the earth, looking for the moment when they can attack it or interfere in its plans. Swamp Thing grows somewhat melancholic. His girlfriend, Abby suggests that he mutates his brain (as he mutates his body) to contemplate a way out of his dilemma. Swamp Thing goes into a strange meditative state in which his head grows into a vast arboreal tree like form. When Abby chops the tree down to find him, after then weeks (to him, mere minutes), he tells her what he has thought about. He will create his successor in her loins. He takes possession of Constantine, and allows him to make love to Abby in a bed in the swamp. She feels her pregnancy beginning. The story ends. This story tries to be profound and comes across merely as preposterous. The carrot God is just too silly, and there are too many side-tangents to characters not particularly relevant to the story. The long cogitation on the nature of man, superman, and nature is pretentious, and fails to carry the plot anywhere at all. A huge disappointment. http://www.dccomics.com/
