EDGINGTON, IAN & DIADOTA JNR, MIKE – XENA WARRIOR PRINCESS - IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS in– BLOOD AND SHADOWS 2000 Dark Horse Comics.
Dark, surreal and sometimes quite amusing graphic comic book short story in which Xena and Gabrielle take a short cut through the woods (at Gabrielle’s suggestion) and get hopelessly lost. They stumble on an inn, where the innkeeper is very glad that they have made it before nightfall. Xena and Gabby realise that something is very wrong, a situation made worse when a woman arrives in some distress because her child, a young girl, has gone missing in the woods. Xena sets out on a late night after dark rescue mission, and the companions stumble on a sacrificial circle belonging to some kind of cult. They think they hear the young girl crying for help, but she is in fact a demonic God, calling itself Bhor the Weir Hog, in effect a were-pig. Xena discovers that it is actually an old, forgotten God of some ancient religion, who has failed to accept that it is already long since dead and forgotten. Xena finishes it off completely, and criticises the innkeeper for a degree of silent collusion in its lingering presence. It has fed on the fear that the innkeeper has generated and maintained around its presence. Creepy and funny in equal measure. There is even an in-joke passing reference to Sam Raimi’s film The Evil Dead when the demon pig quotes lines from it at Xena. (The producers of the show made the film). Xena and Gabrielle arguing a lot over the way gabby has got them lost in the woods is fun, while the detailed depiction of the monster, especially when it sheds its human form, is quite genuinely scary stuff, despite its silly title. www.darkhorse.com
