SEX AND SCIENCE FICTION CULT IN DARLINGTON 18th
May 2006.
A cult called The
Kaotians has just hit the headlines in the UK – In Darlington, A woman was led
on a dog leash through the town by her slave-master, to a local Butcher shop,
which refused to serve them. Police were called to raid the house at which the
lady was living, but they found that no one was being held against their will.
It is
a BDSM cult based on anti-feminist principles in the Gor Science Fiction Novels
by John Norman in the 1960's. This is my press release on the subject.
I'm an ex-cult member - having been in a
celibate religious cult, (Divine Light Mission) in Manchester in
the 1980's (See

a science fiction fan and the soft-core porn Gor books by John Norman
are the ones I regard as its most entertaining badly written hokum of the
genre. The 26 Gor books are basically Conan The Barbarian with extra sex.
Gor is a Harem planet, where tribal factions barter, exchange and steals
one another's sex slave women. The whole economy runs on this. Women are
kidnapped and shanghaied from other planets, including earth to join these
harems. The books grew increasingly sexist and openly hostile to
notions of feminism and the emancipation of women. In the books, women
who get ideas about emancipation, liberation and freedom are quickly suppressed
by the men and even by the other women who like their slavery. Many women
denounced them as intensely sexist. In time the series fell into obscurity.
Modern BDSM cults like the Kaotians (a group named in the
books) are developing a slave culture that draws on some principles from the
Gor novels. The Darlington event involved a man walking a woman through the
town into the Butchers shop on a dog lead, which was inevitably going to
provoke public outcry and media attention. It sounds almost certainly as if the
cult is hoping to launch a publicity campaign and a recruitment drive.
It sounds as if no laws have been broken, but morally
speaking, what has gone on is quite dubious. As the woman in the lead
seems to have put it on by consent, and no one was naked or indecently attired,
there is little that the authorities could have done. What needs to be
investigated is whether the woman, and any other followers of the Kaotians have
been subjected to any kind of brainwashing or mind control. If this is an
extreme hobby, then her action is one of unorthodox choice, but if she has been
pressured and manipulated into doing more than she might otherwise have wished
to do, then the practice has involved coercion. Can she say NO! If she is
committed by mind controlling slavery to the cult's principles?
The danger presented by the cult is that it can make BDSM
activity sound attractive, which it can be if practiced in small doses but such
activity in prolonged practice can lead to dangerous loss of inhibition, and
also to unsafe sex practices that can lead to STD's and unwanted pregnancies.
How the Kaotian sect deals with that danger remains to be seen.
