13 Days
Kevin Costner movie film (in very JFK style presentation) with the
terrifyingly tense events of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, - it's a
well crafted and well acted film, a nuclear drama with no Dr. Strangeglove
type figures, and far from uncritical of the US handling of the events.
For example, the efforts to keep the story away from the media were
scupper by the claimed 'Military exercise activity being code-named
Castro Operation ORTSAC (Read it backwards) and the day ultimately being
saved when the US offer, via Bobby Kennedy offering to pull back a
rarely mentioned similar US initiative to plant nukes in close proximity to
the then USSR in Turkey, there were several near miss incidents, i.e.,
when a US ship fires on a blockade dodging Russian freighter even with
blanks aimed above the bows as a warning shot, and the story is told of
one US pilot shot down and killed trying to get spy pictures of the
Cuban Missile sites, - the film is however told exclusively through US
eyes, it would have been interesting to see some insight into the Russian
and Cuban points of view on the unfolding events, but still a great film, -
and as one audience member put it extremely well at the height of the
tensions. Thank Christ George W wasn't in power then.
