Made in 1983, this is utter drivel of a film that makes little if any sense at all. Michael Sopkiw, leading cast member. introduces the DVD, as though it is a cult classic and work to be proud of, but it’s something I would more readily deny having had any involvement with.
After World War Three has wiped
out all the World’s cities (why New York gets special attention in the title is
unclear), radiation has left surviving women infertile. A group of horse riding
fascists are wiping out any radiation victims, and taking anyone who looks
healthy for genetic experiments. Into
the mess comes a band of A-Team style misfits who think they have a lead on the
one fertile woman left alive. She is in fact in suspended animation, having
been put there before the bombs fell, and now becomes a new sleeping Beauty.
The heroes, aided by a kamikaze dwarf (who needlessly kills himself to save
them when they are doing alright anyway without him) take the woman, in her
protective glass coffin, and ride away to safety, while the hero wakes her up
and starts telling her the bad news about the last twenty years. (The bombs
fell in 1999 apparently).
Derivative
of everything from Escape From New York to Mad Max, the film has no redeeming
features whatsoever. There is an absurd moment when the heroine states how
important sex is by saying that it is what Neil Armstrong had in mind when he
walked on the Moon saying ‘One small step for man, One Giant Leap for
mankind….’ Er… yeah… right.
