FILM REVIEW -CATS AND DOGS
The gags are very funny, a great 007
and Mission Impossible spoof with
Blofeld's Cat getting to be Blofeld, lots of great highlights, and
some genuine thrills and surprises (the cats have a real surprise ally) the
pace intensifies, especially after the dogs finally press the big
red button, when the sets look like they could have been used as a Bond
character's lair, the ninja and Russian cats are actually scary, good
gags, i.e., dogs trying to diffuse a bomb with terrific variation on
the old red wire or blue wire cliché "We're dogs - we're colour
blind",
the humans are weak characters, Goldblum is a boffin too caught up in his work
to notice his kid,, and the inventor of the dog-allergy antidote
serum the cats aim to hijack, but the people have little to do beside the
animals anyway, who fight hard, until the cry 'human ' goes up when they
pretend to be all ordinary until they've gone and scrap again, great scene when
they have trashed Goldblum's house in a fight, and the dogs
send out for a clean up crew, the humans arrive as one dog in decorators
overalls sneaks out the back, the house is perfectly restored. Bond gags you
expect, the real gem is the Weekend At Bern's puns as the cats use a
comatose businessman's wheel-chaired body to take over his Christmas Tree
factory, a place with recorded messages like ' We have just seven months
to go before Christmas' the main villain cat does his voice as workers greet
the boss, with 'hi, how are you|?' type greetings, replying , 'drop
dead, none of your business', and 'No, no, I'm not a cat hell bent on world
domination', ... and in a great speech to the whole staff Thanks for
coming to work today. You're all fired. Don't ask why. Just Go home. You have
only yourselves to blame, go home .. blame your dogs if you want to ..
kick the dog if it makes you feel better.... "
Great film, which apparently upsets
lots of cat lovers. - I like cats, I know it's just a silly film, and I loved
it.
