FILM REVIEW - EVOLUTION
Spot the movie being parodied piece, lots of X-files jokes obviously
with David Duchovney in there, and digs at Men In Black, Ghostbusters (the
director's last big success ).
Mars Attacks loses the most unlikely final
way to kill aliens award to this one though, with its blatant plugs for Head & Shoulders shampoo. Them, and The Blob also are influences, some good
set pieces, i.e., the shopping mall with a Q the winged serpent swirling round with a young shoplifter in its talons, the valley with the dying
Jurassic Park dinosaurs (they don't at first live long on Oxygen) when one finally coughs up a natural air breather, The primate monkeys (making a dig
at both 2001, (the bone weapons) and Congo and the final rise of the big
blob when the army finally let loose unwisely with the napalm.
Some bits are dull and less convincing, Duchovney seems to sleepwalk many scenes not involving any action, - would the lady at the house really mistake the bizarre but nicely realized creature there for a dog? Love the bit where having been through every expression of panic imaginable (a real tour de force of Phil Cool gurning) as the fly in his leg has headed first for his balls and then for his backside, the sidekick tries to strangle the Doctor who takes such drastic steps to save him.
Fun film, disappointing at times, but generally well worth seeing and the scene when they find the rain forest full of Cthulhu critters looks like a CGI version of trap door.
