From Hell is a Jack The Ripper Movie based on an Alan
Moore graphic which I have yet to read, it deals with many authentic
aspects of the ripper story, i.e., the victims are correctly named, and
there's the often overlooked but true piece of evidence of the infamous
writing on the wall denying 'Jewish involvement, interpreted, from the
spelling as a Masonic rather than a Semitic interpretation of the graffiti.
The plot is essentially a reworking of the excellent film Murder By Decree,
though without Holmes and Watson - that film was in itself a
fictionalisation of a real JTR case study by Stephen Knight called Jack The
Ripper The Final Solution, though the film added Holmes as a JTR
contemporary to have the events in the book given a period reference,
here the events are as in book and fictional analysis of same, but the
detective is a drunken psychic, played by Depp, and assisted by Robbie
Coltrane who is basically playing Fitz again, the atmosphere reconstruction
is terrific, the killings chilling and often glimpsed slightly, the
Ripper's aide's catch step being lowered is one of the films most startling
image effects, great stuff, though having sent some theories and
previous films it had few surprises through the use of Frederick Treves
and the Elephant Man is a great touch too, worth looking out for.
