FILM REVIEW - GHOSTWORLD

Based on the Graphic Novel which I bought the day before and
crash-read before going to see this, (also excellent stuff) the film is a
painfully funny acidic look at the decline of the American way through the
eyes of two high school graduating girls who are planning on sharing a
flat as a refuge from the various nerds, creeps and losers they find
themselves surrounded with, but when engaged in their favourite habit of
stalking weirdoes they find a man in his late thirties who is too absorbed
in old 78#s blues records to get involved with women, one of the
girls develops a crush on him and finds a better sense of escape through
contact with him than even with her best friend, so petty jealousies
threaten to destroy a the various relationships forming - lots of great
gags amidst Chasing Amy like sadness, the 50's diner playing 80's music,
the waiter who insists they call him Allen but who they call Weird Al for
his resemblance to Yancovich, the running battle between the Greek
convenience store owner and the Martial Arts obsessed nerd who comes to
rob him and wind him up daily, and the dizzy art teacher who wants
issues instead of recognisable pictures, the poignant haunting
images stay with you too, the old man waiting for a bus despite the service
having apparently stopped two years before, the film is very Keroak/Sallinger in style - well worth seeing and all performances are Oscar worthy ones.
