FILM REVIEW - GINGER SNAPS
his is the best werewolf movie since An American Werewolf
In London,
funny, and scary in equal measures, with a good looking wolf effect.
Ginger and her sister Bridget, are two teenage Goth chicks, in a
small squaresvile town, the girls are three years overdue for their first
period, and have a bizarre death fixation, they make movies depicting
their various demises, for school bring and show presentations,
making their teacher ill, but the town that hates them and is in turn
hated by them has a secret, several dogs are being killed by some sort of
wild creature.
One night the girls decide to kill a dog themselves to make it look
like the irritating pooch was a victim of the 'beast'.... but they arrive
as it is being mauled by said beast, which then turns on Ginger, biting her,
and causing almost instantly her periods to commence,
Her mother, (deeply dotty and embarrassing character) makes a
ridiculous fuzz over this, making her celebration cakes, and making the
father feel decidedly ill with her graphic descriptions of what could come ,
but what comes is not normal, Ginger develops body hairs in all the wrong
places, her teeth grow sharper and she starts growing a tail, which her
sister helps take drastic measures to help covering up. Ginger also starts
going out killing dogs, and seducing the local boys who are turned on by
her as animals are attracted to a dog on heat. She starts to get
hostile to her sister and alienated from her, Brigit turns for assistance
to the local drug dealer who has run over the original werewolf, he
suggests silver as a possible cure, - Brigit has Ginger body pierced
through the naval with a silver ring to no effect, Ginger later rips the
ring out and throws it at her sister, but the dealer also suggests
wolfsbane variations as a possible cure, but there's none available.
Ginger rapes a local redneck boy who also starts turning wolf, while
Ginger kills the local school bully girl too. the girls hide the body in
Mummy's freezer and pretend the blood all over the house (this is a very
viscous wolf) is stage stuff for their latest video of death, but when
they move the body off for burial they lose two fingers in the garden.
Brigit discovers her mum has some wolfsbane and takes it to the dealer,
who makes a supply of the drug, which works ok, Brigit ends up using it
on the wolf boy. She sets off to get Ginger but is stopped by the mum who has
found the fingers and decided that rather than let the police take her
serial killer daughters, she will take them home, and blow up the house in
a gas explosion (We'll leave Daddy out of it, it'll be just us girls'.
Brigit escapes and gets to Ginger as she attacks the drug dealer,
making Ginger attack her too, and gets herself bitten, - dealer belts
ginger with a shovel. Brigit moans that her ruse was to get Ginger to go
home with her and use the wolfsbane which obviously works, (she has to get
fresh stuff made) they put Ginger in the dealer's van and head for home,
but Ginger changes to full wolf mode in the van, and back home things get
seriously scary, claustrophobic and tense and very sad - seriously great
film for strong stomach's only - class film making all round.
