HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE

Excellent film, which I will see again soon, close in
so many ways to the spirit and flavour of the wonderful J K Rowling book. Beautifully cast, if
anything the quality of the Quidditch game sequence makes anything that
follows seem anti-climatic, but it's all so good, Rickman and Coltrane
are both outstanding as are the main kids, the Slitherin House kids
ooze quiet menace all of their own, very like a whole house of Flashmans
from Tom Brown type adventures, the face burning touch to the finale is
actually quite startlingly violent after the relative gentleness of what
precedes it, good film all round, hope the standard is maintained for the
sequels that HP1's success is bound to green light.

The plot will develop with later films, with Voldermort as yet unseen, as should be the case. The film shows Hogwarts for the first time, capturing a sense of wonder that later films would struggle to match. Richard Harris is terrific as Dumbledore, as is John Cleese as Nick, The Nearly Headless Ghost., a character shamefully under-employed in the books and the films.
