MANCHESTER FOOD AND DRINK – TAKE AWAYS.

                                                                                   RATINGS

*  LOUSY  **  ADEQUATE ***  AVERAGE ****  ABOVE AVERAGE   *****  FANTASTIC.

THE BEN CHIPPY *** (Moston Lane, Moston, Manchester. Situated close to  The Ben Brierley pub, hence the name,  this is a fine Chippy that has also recently taken to offering kebabs and pizzas to compete with the many take-always that compete for business on the same stretch of road. They do some good cheap lunchtime price deals.

BURGER KING ** Lots of branches in Manchester, with the main one next to PriMark on Mosely Street. They are  certainly better than the MacDonalds,  with more beef in the burgers. Their happy meal options often come with different toys than the ones advertised in the window displays though.

DELIGHTFUL GARDEN *** - Oldham Road, Newton Heath, Manchester - Nicely named and nice food from this little Chinese take-away in a mugger's paradise area of North Manchester. They do good cheap scollops.

GO CHICKEN * Portland Street, Manchester City Centre. A KFC style chicken supper bar where the food bears no resemblance to what is on offer in the pictures over the serving area. I ordered a cheese-burger which was warmed up rapidly from frozen, and casually mixed with very pale under heated chips. When I pointed out that the meal  had no salad on it (though plainly advertised with salad) the proprietor cheerfully told me that some nights he did salads and some nights he didn't. I told him that some nights I buy a meal I don't like and some nights I don't. That night was one night when I walked out of the shop without taking the prepared food or leaving any money for it.  Don't Go Chicken if you can afford the time to Go somewhere else.

JANAM’S ***** Portland Street. Manchester City CentreProbably the best Kebabs in Manchester, with large name, and a varied salad with  lots of sauces and spices, made to order.

KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN (KFC) ** Limited choice fast food places, surprisingly Spartan in Manchester, since the closure of the Oxford Road branch. They have a few other choices, but generally speaking it is chicken, chicken or chicken here.  Eating out of a bucket was never that appealing anyway.

LA ROSA * Gt. Ancoats Street - I never got to try the food, as the staff were constantly giving me the wrong order, and the wrong change. They then started fighting among themselves (literally) as to who was to blame for this. I just got a full refund and left to dine elsewhere. How  this shop stays open is beyond me.

LEO'S FISH BAR ** Oldham Street, Manchester. Well located, right off Piccadilly,  near Oxfam and the dreadful Nobles Arcade, this is a good quick fix chippy for people tired of waiting for their buses. The  eat in service is fine, but rather more expensive.

MACDONALDS *  Address - Everywhere you look  inevitably, the spy centers for the American Embassy and CIA  that sell the blandest priciest of the junk foods, despite the MacLibel case and the Super size Me film exposes. The Milk Shakes are nice, but the food is bland and salty. The Breakfasts are truly dreadful, worse than airline food.

MAXWIN'S FRIED CHICKEN *  Oldham Street, Manchester.  Rather lazy little shop   where the staff rarely notice you are even in unless you shout to them. A large broken window was left unfixed for  months. So-so food and so-so indifferent service.

PIZZA CO – Oxford Road, Manchester. *** Chaotically busy and popular fast food outlet with nice seating, and fast service, and though relatively cheap with excellent food, portions are rather spartan. I was served a lasagne in a plastic tub which itself was contained in a box, but there wasn’t much of it to eat for the price.

ROYAL TANDOORI  ** Swan Street, off Oldham Street, North Manchester.  This place does food to different standards on different visits. Sometimes you get plenty to eat and it tastes great. On other occasions, they do a Kebab that comes with Minimalist salad,  i.e., a bit of lettuce and a few thin slices of tomato. There was plenty of lukewarm kebab meat, but the impression I got was that the lack of customers, even on a busy City Centre night meant that they had to offload a great deal of it or it would need throwing out. The staff forgot my chips, or rather the French Fries,  and never added salt or vinegar until I asked them – normally asking the customer if these are required is a reflex action for staff. Service and food were so bad that only a few friends being eager to go there lured me back. (They wanted to go there because it was nearest to our drinking  hole that night). On this occasion,  the food was great. Other visits have seen the  quality vary enormously. Eating here is a game of Russian Roulette with your taste buds.

SAFAD’S ***** – Bloom Street, The Village. Manchester City Centre One of the best value eat in or take out establishments,  offering a spicy Lamb, Cheese or Spinach  feast called a Fataya for a mere £2.60 which is excellent value, and very filling.

SHAH'S FISH AND CHIPS ** - FOUNTAIN STREET OLDHAM TOWN CENTRE. Plenty of food, and cheap, but the chips are bland and the gravy very watery.  No amount of salt and vinegar really helped.

STEPHEN LAM'S  * Oldham Road, Newton Heath, Manchester Near Dean Lane, with decent chips but lousy service. The shop is often like the Marie Celeste as far as finding anyone serving food is concerned.

SUBWAY *** Various branches throughout Manchester. Subway reproduce as often as Star Trek Tribbles. If there is a wide enough space between two parked cars, another branch of Subway will open there. The Sandwiches are excellent, though the process for ordering them is complex and confusing, and some extra fillings add to the price while others do not. The staff often speak poor English and struggle to understand what you want too specifically, but the food is first rate and fresh. You can eat in or take food away.

TASTE MASTERS * Oldham Street. Manchester City Centre They should call it ‘Taste Matters’ to remind themselves that food should actually taste of something too.  My visit was further marred  by a colleague discovering that her food was crawling with earwigs. While staff reluctantly offered her a refund, I was refused one on the grounds that my food, from the same batch, was not affected,  and  my assertion that seeing other food this contaminated put me off eating fell on deaf ears.

WING LI - *** Kenyon Lane, Moston, Manchester.  My nearest Chinese and English take away. Very nice food, and friendly staff, who often present every customer with a Chinese Calendar for the New Year at Christmas. The only negative criticism is that the shop often closes without warning for days and weeks at a time. They often close early and  it is often frustrating to head there to find the shutters down. When they're open, the food is fine.
