DEMON DOG

This is the ballad of Prince Rupert's pride and joy
The Kings' favourite general had a dog called Boy
Who took on more horse than most regimente of pike
Fending off many a cavalry gallop, charge and strike
Musketeers hesitated when he barked and ran by
The men grew nervous, distracted, and so doomed to die
They wasted shot on the dog that should have been aimed at men
To perish reloading, before they could powder up and fire again
Roundheads awarded the beast spectral, supernatural power,
Men who'd fought men saw Boy and started to cower
They called him a poodle but feared the hound was from Hell
He even set a tremble upon Oliver Ironside Cromwell
Gifted with invisibility for commitment to the art of the spy
The dog could turn transparent to eavesdrop on all that went by
Of those able to see him, a few made pursuit but none could run faster
As he Re-crossed the field to report back on all to his owner and master
The New Model Army put a price on Boy's head
With generous rewards for any who killed the dog dead
But when it finally perished at Marston Moor
No one actually saw it take shot and fall to the floor
No one could claim credit for the death of the dog
Killed in the chaos of war in the mist, and powder-fire'd fog
Rupert was in despair on hearing of the grim discovery
While Cromwell saw only divine omen of Roundhead recovery
As Rupert fought badly at Naseby and the King's forces fell
The King surrendered soon after Rupert lost Cambridge as well
Had Devil Dog lived would Crown, head and control of the nation
Have Stayed with Charles and would we have needed a Restoration
When Lord Protector followed Boy down to where no one returns?
A little dog bites, barks and runs and the whole of history turns
This was the Ballad of Prince Rupert's pride and joy
Unsung hero Of Edgehill, a hell-hound called Boy.
