WE
ARE THE GREEN ROOM
My
maiden voyage across the seas of creativity started here
Nervous
newcomer gulping beer
In
order to calm myself down
Dreading
the thought of being boo’ed out of town,
Never
to put pen to paper again,
I
wondered if I’d gone insane
Thinking
I could entertain
With
anything I had to write down.
But
there it was, applause, laughter, acceptance, cheer,
Celebrated
with even more beer,
But
not to drown out any sense of fear.
The
Green Room Greenhorn virgin sci-fi storyteller in rhyme,
Had
such a fantastic time, he had to do it more and more
Too
many thoughts, ideas and poems to unleash
I
was a monster storming the slams and every open mic within my reach
Any
poet in a storm – any venue that would have me and my poetry - Arthur was on
his way,
But
The Green Room was always my favourite stage to play
And
I could never forget how Creatures Of The Night
Inspired
me on to write, write, write,
And
despite many hobbies I still put most of my time
Into
navigating my way round the Seven Seas Of Rhyme.
But
now the ship that saved me is sinking
While
her Bards rhyme on
The
Green Room funding’s gone
And
I find myself thinking
The
unthinkable – the unsinkable Green Room, sinking, sinking, sinking.
It’s
not the Titanic. We will all survive. I will survive – it’s more Gloria Gaynor
than Celine Dion
Our
hearts, thoughts, dreams and love will sail, fly and float on,
Our
poetry will endure, of that I’m sure
But
mine may sound a note of bittersweet remembrance
For
that which was taken from us – the place my mind learned to dance,
We
few – we once so happy few, were there
With
Rosie, Rod, Dominic, Chloe, Gerry, - we share
The
essence of the Green Room, which made us who we are
And
no matter how far
We
go we can never forget Manchester’s greatest stage
She’ll
influence our every performance and every page
As
we take to new cabarets and shows
The
audience will look up from their rows
And
see the spark of fire in our eyes
And
those in the wise
Will
whisper ‘they played the Green Room’.
No
one goes down with the ship – we will all survive, think don’t sink, and become
truly unsinkable. We gained immortality in the hearts of those who saw us play
such a wonderful arena –
Farewell,
Green Room, it’s been an honour.
Written to commemorate the closure of the Green Room performance space in Manchester, a venue and bar that provided many of Manchester’s greatest creative artists, poets and cabaret performers with opportunities to boost their careers. The poem was performed there a month before the closure and many listeners and readers were deeply moved by it – an effect I’ve never achieved with any of my other work to date.
