                                                TANTRIC SEX

Tantra – literally translates as ‘The weave of continuity – that which weaves and bonds us all together’. Tantra makes use of physical and even sexual feelings and sensations as a means to achieve mysticism, usually under the guidance of a spiritual Guru. As mystic, Ratnasara wrote - "He who realises the truth of the body can come to know the truth of the universe."

Much of Tantra is based on meditation, yoga and understanding the Chakras, the points in the body where spiritual energy is most easily tapped into or released - the best known Chakra point being the Third Eye at the centre of the human temple. There are many Tantras that have little to do with sexuality.

Of several Tantra, or at least modern Neo-Tantra new age versions of its schools, it is the Kuala Tantra systems, which focuses most on sexual energy and orgasms as a religious experience.

Much sexual Tantra focuses on the miraculous life generating properties of semen - In its most extreme and easily abused form, Tantra would involve the female subject having sex with her lover and with her guru in the hope of adding the spiritual element from the Master and that from her boyfriend or husband to her foetus, or potential earthly offspring - cynics might see this as an excuse for some gurus to test drive the future brides of their male followers.

It was not unusual in some tantric groups for sexual congress to be witnessed by the guru who will advise and comment on the couple's behaviour as they mate – as an extreme form of relationship guidance. In some tantric cults communal orgies enable the (usually) voyeuristic masters to watch whole groups of followers explore one another's bodies and learn from one another's mistakes.  Masters rarely let themselves be lost in the general scrum and frenzy of the mass orgy. When masters wanted sex, they usually selected the best of the women for more private tuition, which created a sense of awe among other followers. The women, and sometimes, men, who were having sex with the masters were seen as enlightened beings who could give orders and disciplines within the cult organization, and sometimes pick out their own lovers from the multitudes too.  The closer someone was sexually to the Masters the more they were seen as enlightened and figures of authority in their own right.

Such practices, which were very intense in the cult of Bhagwan Rajneesh in the 1980’s, have largely been abandoned due to fears raised by the AIDS epidemic. At their height, an orgy at an Osho Rajneesh temple would involve hundreds of participants (Sanyassins) and many broke their arms and legs in the naked frenzies. Such activities made the Roman Saturnalias look tame by comparison.

Another tantric approach equates orgasms with states of religious ecstasy such as Samhadi and Kundalini and tries to take practitioners from one state to the other – once the needs of the finite body are sexually fulfilled or exhausted, the follower can be drawn towards study and contemplation of spiritual needs. Intense sexual practice may well therefore precede a few hours of meditation and religious devotion. It’s a bit like only getting to go to the pub after playing football all day – by burning off the sexual energy, the follower is made ready for spiritual needs to be met.

There are three purposes to sex in Tantra - procreation, pleasure and liberation. To critics, the emphasis on the last of these reduces Tantra to an excuse for licentiousness and free-sex, thinly disguised as something sacred. Many Indian scholars are disturbed the the Californication of fornication involved in modern tantric activities, and its confusion with pop psychology as an excuse for an easy means of gaining sexual experiences. .

Shambhavi Saraswati gives a description of the difference between real Tantra and Neotantra:  "Neo-Tantra ritualizes sex. Authentic Tantra sexualizes ritual".

In some traditional Hindu and Buddhist temples people seeking an orgy and not much more will quickly be sent away. True Tantra is not simply a cheap alternative to a brothel. Tantric sex may only be allowed after months or even years of sexual abstinence, with even masturbation being forbidden. The body, mind and spirit would have to be purified to the satisfaction of a true Tantric Master before you could even begin. Tantra can teach sexuality and love making so that every touch, carress and kiss becomes an intense mystical experience. Tantrics, by the very nature of their practices, last longer in love making, erections (for the male) and orgasms. The idea is to revere your lover(s) as a temple and experience the often spntanious extasy of every instant of the sexual union as a spiritual force. Tantric love making is slow and graceful – the idea is to delay orgasm and prolong the pleasures as much as possible. There is little room for the ‘quickie’ in Tantra. The emphasis is in making sexual congress last as long as possible. Tantra is dismissive of Western notions of the orgasm as the ultimate goal of sex – Tantra is about slow, patient, prolonged foreplay.

In typical Tantra, the lovers will bathe, often together, to cleanse away the detritus of the day. A good meal is then shared to build up energy for the long love making session to come. Atmosphere is now crucial, with mood lighting, ambience, insense, etc. There should be no music as that can serve as a distraction from the lover. You annoint one another with oils and massage one another for deeper relaxation. Now you move slowly towards sexual contact – you should draw back from reaching orgasm, even if it means breaking embrace to return to earlier stages of the love making process. David Lawson says;

“It may seem strange to fight the body's urge to release, but this has a lot of       advantages. Apart from the most fantastic sex you've ever experienced, it's supposed to be the ideal way of achieving physical and spiritual well-being and if religion's your addiction, you may find Tantra brings you closer to your god.”

He also writes;

"It gives a whole body orgasm, a completely holistic experience. One of the reasons that people are drawn to Tantric sex is, I believe, because there's a very definite need to connect mind, body and spirit."

            The ways of Tantra are not an easy casually sexual experiment but a whole spiritual and sexual way of being. You can no more just dabble in Tantra than you can be a priest or a nun for a week and then go back to an ordinary way of life.

THE KAMA SUTRA – NON-TANTRIC TEXT BOOK.

A huge assumption made by Westerners is that the Kama Sutra is a Tantric sex guide. It was never intended as such. The Kama Sutra, in its full presentation, is a detailed and actually rather dull reading guide to all aspects of social etiquette, covering all aspects of life from how to set out a dinner table, to buying food, and also there is some reference to sexual courtship and orgasm too. The book was never simply a catalogue of increasingly demanding sex-positions, as modern editions of various books called Kama sutra claim. Alex Comfort’s Joy Of Sex is probably the best-known book that serves that function. The Kama sutra was introduced in the West by Sir Richard Burton, (The Victorian explorer, not the actor), who had kept an Indian mistress during his travels, and who secretly got the book translated in Britain as an antidote to the increasingly prudent and puritanical attitudes to sex shown by his contempories.

The Kama Sutra would not reach wider audiences until the mid 1960’s as it was banned from all but scholarly publication. That Comfort’s book, and other sex guides were flooding the market at this time, as people were getting into Eastern Mysticism (this was the Swinging Sixties, when contraception, free love, etc, were at their height, and the time when the Beatles took up Transcendental Meditation), the various new sexual and mystical philosophies on release collapsed into one another, causing some confusion from which Westerners have yet to extricate themselves.

As Nik Douglas writes – “Vatsyayana's Kama Sutra is divided into seven parts; general remarks, amorous advances, acquiring a wife, duties and privileges of a wife, relations with other men's wives, and a section about courtesans and occult means. The seventh and last part of the Kama Sutra is an appendix to the main work. It includes detailed formulations of substances familiar to Ayurvedic (Indian indigenous) medicine, with the emphasis on virilifics and aphrodisiacs. Some magical procedures of a type that in later times would be described as Tantric are also found in the last chapter of the Kama Sutra.”

So sexuality can be slow, fast, spiritual or just physical – the range of experiences available to us are infinite and with the right willing partner, there is no reason why sex cannot be profound, sacred, beautiful and rewarding, and even mystical.
