WALK REPORT BOGGART HOLE CLOUGH BLACKLEY MOSTON NORTH MANCHESTER
Boggart Hole Clough known to Many Mancunians simply as The Clough is a 190 acre public park at the heart of Blackley, with a mixture of well landscaped fields, well sign-posted footpaths and wild open unspoilt and uncultivated forest valleys.
Boggart Hole Hall, now demolished, was believed to be haunted by the Boggart after which he park is named. The Boggart is a popular Lancastrian name for an impish and mischievous ghost. One story has it that the imp behaved like a poltergeist, throwing crockery around the kitchens and committing acts of vandalism until the owner fled in distraction to the States only to find the creature travelling with him offering no escape. Local poets like Ben Brierley wrote of the Boggart, and there is annual Halloween night walks in search of the creature.
Ghosts aside, the park is very sedate and cal, with eyrie mists in the morning, and a wide range of wildlife, ranging from rabbits to squirrel, and Canada Geese.
There is a boating lake, open in summer months, and several walking routes. Only the over-abundance of warnings to keep dogs on leads and clean up after them mar the tranquillity though the park can sometimes attract local youths who can behave aggressively.
Highlights include the boating lake, the steep 99 Steps, named for obvious reasons, and the fabulous Blackley Angel war memorial. Covering both World Wars, the Angel is a magnificent sculpture on a high column, though facing the wrong way for photographing easily as from behind, the monument has wide open ground, though from in front, the memorial overlooks a steep tree lined sloping valley.
A favourite haunt of my childhood, as I live close to the Clough, it is a place well worth visiting all the year round.
The local micro-brewery Boggart Brewery takes its name from the Clough.
