BLOG ARTICLE REVIEW – MONICA GAUDIO - A TALE OF TWO TARTS 2007-2009 – Gode Cookery.

A minor feature on the history of apple pie has become a cause celebre online, due to an incredible plagiarism scandal.  Food historian, Monica Gaudio, wrote the original feature. http://www.godecookery.com/twotarts/twotarts.html showing the changing ingredients, piecrust textures, through the ages for a European treat, and why the phrase 'as American' as apple pie' is therefore misleading. The full recipes for two pies, or tarts baked three centuries apart are included as illustrative examples.

It's an innocuous feature that took some time to research and edit. The spelling is correct and only olde worlde when quoting. There are sample recipes in it, but the very good article is not just a recipe as some critics have claimed, presumably because they haven’t read the feature.

The controversy began in October 2010 when friends of the author spotted the article in a food journal called Cook’s Source and congratulated the writer on getting into print in such a journal. This was news to Monica Gaudio, as she’d never sent it in or been asked for the feature.  Complaints to Cook’s Source editor, Judith Griggs, initially fell on deaf ears but eventually provoked a brazen unapologetic response. Gaudio asked for compensation in the form of a modest payment to a journalism charity, not a big sum for her own profit, though few could blame her if she had asked for that.

Griggs responded that Judith should be thrilled that her spelling was edited and her name left on the article and that no money was going to be paid. Monica posted the reply on her blog, and friends circulated it, provoking increasing ire. When author Neil Gaiman picked up the story, the story went viral on Twitter, Facebook, and beyond. The battle rages on with Griggs remaining silent hoping the fuss will die down. That seems unlikely to ever happen.

Where the author Gaudio asked first revealed what was going on -

With major journalists including the New York Times on the case it looks
as if Cook's Source have been cheerfully stealing features from various
sources for some time - Someone put out this amazing painstaking
research spread sheet list of 160 different similar copyright heists by
the same magazine -

this scandal is likely to destroy the publication now.
