WEBSITE Ė THE CAMPAIGN FOR REAL ALE (CAMRA).
One of the most important social pressure groups, and also one of the most militant. CAMRA dislike pubs that cut down or even abandon cask conditioned fine ales, where the yeast is still fresh and active in the barrels, in favour of mass produced chemical gunge and synthetic lagers and bottled alcopops. CAMRA members will often criticise, condemn nor even boycott bars, which do not offer some choices of well-kept real ales for the drinkers who seek a tipple of some quality. Bars, which promote fine real ales like Jeffrey Hudson Bitter or Pendle Witch, or the lethally strong Owd Tom, get highly recommended, as do microbrewery bars. CAMRA organise and support some of the largest beer festivals in the World. CAMRA produces the annual Good Beer Guide, a veritable Bible to its readers who can look up the ales and many of the bars that serve them. CAMRA are not averse to promoting well-presented Perrys and Ciders, October 2006 saw a major online campaign for spreading information about them. The website can put you in touch with local CAMRA members who will advise you on the best pubs for finding real ale near to you, and possibly even join you on a visit to said establishments.† CAMRA is virtually a drinkerís Union, and with 80.000 members it can make brewers sit up and take notice when it needs to. Few other bodies help to protect the night out we all like to enjoy when we donít have to worry about going to work the next day. CAMRA help to make sure that our beer is good, safe, and value for our money; sharks run many breweries. CAMRA helps to ensure that we find the bars and clubs that have some protection from such exploitation. Their service to the discerning drinker deserves a salute.
