JUMP THE SHARK WEBSITE. http://www.jumptheshark.com/

Brilliant web site exploring the simple concept of how and when a good popular TV show suddenly goes off the boil, and causes its fans to lose interest. The title of the site comes from an episode of Happy Days in which The Fonz goes water ski-ing and literally leaps over a shark. By this stage, viewers realised that the once great series was now unwatchable, and the programme began to plummet out of the ratings, soon to face cancellation.  The site lists 2,500 TV shows, and lists them episode by episode, inviting fans and viewers to vote on which episodes changed the show so much that they lost interest, even after years and several seasons of happy watching. Several factors can do it, i.e. the introduction of a new cast member, such as Scrappy Do being brought into Scooby Do. Shows in which a new actor playing the same role replaces a regular character are frequently seen to jump the shark. The list does give viewers the option to say that they think the show remained consistently watchable, or that it was never any good in the first place if they wish. Some shows get more attention than others, and the site lists its favourites. The Simpsons rates highly, as one of the shows most often voted as never having jumped at all.  As does MASH. If there is a flaw it is that the list doesn’t allow for a series just having the occasional duff episode but then getting back on track, or for shows starting out badly but later improving and becoming more watchable. There are some really extreme bad episodes listed, such as Nancy Reagan’s special guest appearance on Different Strokes. You can vote on just about any show, and add comments on why you thought a show went bad, or you can defend a show on this hugely entertaining, thought provoking web site. http://www.jumptheshark.com/
