WEBSITE REVIEW – TWITTER

http://twitter.com/about#about

With Facebook, Myspace, and many similar social networking sites, you would think the Internet had little need for a new one, but now Twitter is rising high and mighty as one of the best such communication sites online.  The novelty of Twitter is that messages are short, - a maximum of 140 characters, and all answer the question of what the users are doing right at that point in time.  My latest entry as I write on my page is an announcement that I am going out to a live music gig. I’ll shortly replace that with an announcement about the launch of this very review. Other users, such as Darth Vader, http://twitter.com/darthvader use their 140 words to fire off one line jokes.

There are several celebrities on Twitter, including US President Barack Obama, http://twitter.com/BarackObama Former Presidential candidate and environmentalist, Al Gore, http://twitter.com/algore singer Lily Allen, http://twitter.com/Lilyallen burlesque queen, Dita Von Teese, http://twitter.com/DitaVonTeese And controversial radio and TV personalities like Jonathon Ross and. Russell Brand, http://twitter.com/rustyrockets.  NASA has several pages relating to its space missions, such as this one, http://twitter.com/MarsPhoenix  and the radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, http://twitter.com/jodrellbank  in Cheshire is also on Twitter. There are several fake profiles out there too as on other social networking sites.

This week, one famous user, comedian, actor and author, Stephen Fry, http://twitter.com/stephenfry really put Twitter on the map of cyberspace when he was in America and got  trapped in a broken elevator with several other people, and kept them calm by discussing their plight live on Twitter, and even by posting links to photos of them stuck in the lift until they were all safely released.  The event made the news and Twitter’s popularity, credibility and ratings increased dramatically. .

It is a lovely, and simple site to navigate. Where it needs improvements in its search for friends potential. You can search for people by name, but many users use pseudonyms and may not come up even if on Twitter.  What would help if it was easier to search for people with shared interests, ie, Poets, Civil War Re=enactors, and  people in a given geographical location, ie,. Manchester, England. Listing friends from A to Z rather than in the order you find them would also be useful.

Twitter is captivating and easy to get addicted to. There is a huge thrill in finding friends and getting new messages through. I am proud to be a bit of a Twit.
