REVIEW - YOUTUBE. WEBSITE http://www.youtube.com/
A straightforward
video snippets feed site that has become something of an Internet phenomena.
Youtube allows the rapid downloading of video extracts of just about anything.
The site was set up to allow people to show film, often with sound of
themselves, which friends and general web users can then browse. In reality
many people download copyright film material, pop videos, and some pornographic
material as well. The amateur film
footage is often very blurry, with cameras shaking, bad focussing, and the
central piece of the action may often come at the very end, with little time to
seethe reaction of the people involved. Many pieces look like out-takes from
video pratfall shows like Jeremy Beadle’s You’ve Been Framed, or Kirsty’s Video
Disaster shows. A few people have been
imaginative enough to use the medium more creatively and there is therefore
good interesting material amidst the dross. There are imitation sites now, such
as the similar video link material on My Space, though that often involves
clicking on a piece of film to start it rolling while Youtube films generally
start right away. The site is well
search engined to enable browsers to be able to find similar kinds of film
footage easily. The films usually start off small, with an option to put them
in full screen mode enabling you to have larger versions. Many however are so
badly shot that you wonder why anyone bothers to air them at all. It is possible to rate the videos on many of
the downloads, enabling
some critical response, and hopefully this will stop people just flooding the
site with their worst camcorder footage. It isn’t the fault of the site that it
attracts so much dross, but the fault of those who are using the new medium.
Children draw matchstick men and scribble when learning to draw. Those who keep
practicing, go on to learn real art and design. Sticking with Youtube and its
imitators may well produce serious web-art work before long. It is therefore
worth watching. http://www.youtube.com/
